Schauensee Castle, the landmark of the town of Kriens near Lucerne, Switzerland, affectionately known as SCHLÖSSLI, has always held a great fascination with its austere beauty. It is particularly true for Eva Brunner, who spent part of her childhood there after her mother married the illustrious and charismatic banker Ernst Brunner. This was followed by an unprecedented rise in society, which came to an abrupt end a decade later in bankruptcy. In the autobiographical radio play “Blauensee – A true fairy tale with fatal consequences” from 2007, Eva explored the circumstances behind this story. For the little girl, however, the enchanted surroundings were a breeding ground for all kinds of fantasies. In 2022, Eva went in search of traces at the SCHLÖSSLI and is now working on an artist’s book with new photographs, excerpts from the family album and an essay.

DINO DOMESTICUS

DINO DOMESTICUS

“An ever-present fascination with a world that predates our civilisation can be seen in the photographs of Eva Brunner’s Dino Domesticus series. Dinosaurs in all forms, from toys to scientific specimens, can be found in children’s bedrooms and museums alike. From a safe distance of approximately 200 million years, these enigmatic, mysterious and even threatening giant beasts fuel our fantastic imaginings of prehistoric times. Documentation and staging combine in Brunner’s artistic work to create a visual narrative that allows the factual and the imaginary to interact in such a way that an intensive engagement with this mystery from various perspectives becomes possible.”–Wolfgang Zurborn

FROM THE SERIES „DINO DOMESTICUS“

EVA BRUNNER – FEATURING BERNHARD KEMPEN

Dino Domesticus traces the quiet afterlife of prehistory in the present. In museums, amusement parks and domestic interiors, dinosaurs reappear as oversized figures, fragile skeletons and toy-like miniatures — echoes of a world we never knew, yet never ceased to imagine.

The photographs are accompanied by short stories by Eva Brunner and the science fiction writer Bernhard Kempen, who also inhabits the images as a model. Between text and image, performance and reflection, a subtle dialogue unfolds.

Dino Domesticus becomes a meditation on memory and projection — on how the extinct persists within us, as image, as fiction, as a lingering desire for what is irretrievably lost.
